An Rug Analysis
Kurdish rug, Persia, early 20th century
Exceptional sheen of the pile. Springtime shorn wool. Natural
dyes : indigo, cochineal. Executed on a small horizontal loom.
The chromatic contrast of the intertwined three medallions
(one dark navy blue, the two others pink) creates an illusionist
field depth.

The foremost central medallion features two head to
foot pink flower vases. The mirroring symmetrical effect enhances
the unreality - or abstractedness - of this carpet composition.
Upwards and downwards this pink hexagonal medallion extends
into arrows with curved, jagged borders ; so does the threefold
outer border of the second night blue medallion.
The chromatic contrasts animate the composition.
The second night blue medallion features two lateral
stylised candelabras (or "trees of life"). The exquisite
indigo blue variations add to the sense of illusionist perspective
and mirror effect of the whole.
The third pink-grounded medallion is a counterpoint
replica of the central decor of flower bouquet vases. Two
naïve child-like figures are to be noted in this environment.
An interesting, vibrant and animated indigo border
is strewn with flying creatures featured in a cubist manner
and complementary colours of deep orange red and light brown.
